Amebiasis

Amebiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. It can be treated with antibiotics such as Metronidazole, which is considered the gold standard for treatment.

How Amebiasis Medications Work

Amebiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. The gold standard treatment for amebiasis is Metronidazole, which works by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA and RNA in the parasite's cells.

Metronidazole Mechanism of Action

  • Inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis, leading to cell death
  • Targets the parasite's pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme
  • Results in the disruption of cellular processes and ultimately, parasite death

Alternative Treatments

For patients who cannot tolerate Metronidazole or have contraindications, alternative treatments include:

  • Paromomycin: an aminoglycoside antibiotic that works by binding to the parasite's ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis
  • Iodoquinol: an antiprotozoal agent that works by disrupting the parasite's cell membrane and causing cell death
  • Nitazoxanide: a thiazolide derivative that works by inhibiting the parasite's pyruvate ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) enzyme, similar to Metronidazole
