How Ascariasis Medications Work
Ascariasis is a parasitic infection caused by the roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides. The gold standard medication for treating ascariasis is Albendazole, an anthelmintic that works by interfering with the parasite's ability to absorb glucose.
Albendazole Mechanism of Action: Albendazole binds to tubulin in the parasite's microtubules, preventing polymerization and ultimately leading to the death of the parasite.
Other anthelmintic medications, such as Ivermectin and Praziquantel, can also be used as alternatives for treating ascariasis. These medications work by either paralyzing the parasite or disrupting its ability to absorb nutrients.
Key Features of Ascariasis Medications:
Interfere with parasite's glucose absorption
Paralyze or disrupt nutrient absorption in parasites
