How Common Cold Medications Work

The common cold is a viral infection caused by various pathogens, including rhinoviruses. Antiviral medications are the gold standard for treating the common cold.

  • Antiviral Medication (e.g., Oseltamivir): This class of medication targets and inhibits the replication of viral particles, thereby reducing the severity and duration of symptoms.

However, antiviral medications may not be effective for all types of viruses that cause the common cold. In such cases, alternative treatments can provide relief from symptoms:

  • Decongestants (e.g., Pseudoephedrine): These medications help relieve nasal congestion by reducing swelling in the nasal passages.
  • Expectorants (e.g., Guaifenesin): Expectorants thin and loosen mucus, making it easier to cough up.
  • Corticosteroids (e.g., Prednisone): These medications can reduce inflammation in the nasal passages and sinuses, providing relief from congestion and sinus pressure.
