How Endometrial Hyperplasia Medications Work

Endometrial hyperplasia is a condition characterized by the abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus. The primary goal of medication treatment is to reduce estrogen levels or counteract their effects on the endometrium.

  • Progestin Therapy: Progesterone helps balance out the effects of estrogen, preventing excessive cell growth and reducing the risk of cancer development. Medications like Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (Depo-Provera) are commonly used for this purpose.
  • Tamoxifen: This medication is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), which means it can block estrogen receptors in some tissues while mimicking estrogen's effects in others. Tamoxifen has been shown to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer and hyperplasia.

The effectiveness of these medications depends on various factors, including the severity of the condition, patient age, and overall health status. In some cases, medication treatment may be used as a bridge therapy until surgery (hysterectomy) can be performed to remove the uterus.
