How Epilepsy Medications Work
Epilepsy medications, also known as anticonvulsants or anti-seizure medications, work by altering the electrical activity in the brain. They can either reduce the frequency and severity of seizures or prevent them from occurring altogether.
Gold Standard: Phenytoin
The gold standard for treating epilepsy is Phenytoin, an anticonvulsant medication that works by stabilizing the threshold for electrical activity in the brain. It blocks sodium channels, which helps to reduce the spread of abnormal electrical impulses that can lead to seizures.
Alternatives and Mechanisms
- Lamotrigine: Works by inhibiting the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, such as glutamate, which can contribute to seizure activity.
- Levetiracetam: Binds to SV2A protein on neurons, reducing excitatory neurotransmitter release and stabilizing neuronal membranes.
- Valproate: Has multiple mechanisms of action, including inhibition of sodium channels, GABA receptor potentiation, and blockade of calcium channels.
These medications can be used alone or in combination to achieve optimal seizure control. The choice of medication depends on the individual patient's needs, medical history, and potential side effects.
