How Glioblastoma Medications Work

Glioblastoma is a type of brain cancer that requires a multi-modal treatment approach. While surgery remains the gold standard for glioblastoma treatment, medications play a crucial role in managing symptoms and prolonging survival.

Medications Used to Treat Glioblastoma

  • Temozolomide: An oral chemotherapeutic agent that works by alkylating DNA, thereby inhibiting tumor cell growth. It is often used in combination with radiation therapy.
  • Bevacizumab: A monoclonal antibody that targets vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), preventing the formation of new blood vessels that feed the tumor.
  • Lomustine: An oral chemotherapeutic agent that works by cross-linking DNA, thereby inhibiting tumor cell growth.

These medications can help manage symptoms such as seizures, headache, nausea and vomiting, weakness or numbness in the face, arm, or leg, and vision changes. They can also be used to prolong survival and improve quality of life for patients with glioblastoma.
