How Goiter Medications Work

Goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland, can be treated with various medications. The primary goal of these treatments is to reduce the size of the thyroid gland and alleviate symptoms.

Treatment Options

  • Anti-thyroid Medications: Methimazole and propylthiouracil are commonly used to reduce thyroid hormone production, thereby shrinking the goiter. These medications work by inhibiting the synthesis of thyroid hormones.
  • Beta-blockers: Propranolol is sometimes prescribed to alleviate symptoms such as rapid heartbeat, tremors, and anxiety associated with hyperthyroidism. Beta-blockers do not affect the size of the goiter but help manage related symptoms.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy (Alternative)

Radioactive iodine therapy is another alternative treatment for goiter, particularly in cases where anti-thyroid medications are ineffective or contraindicated. This treatment involves taking radioactive iodine orally, which is then absorbed by the thyroid gland and destroys part of it.

Gold Standard: Surgery

The gold standard for treating goiter is surgery, which involves removing all or part of the thyroid gland. Surgery is typically recommended in cases where medications are ineffective or contraindicated, or when there is a suspicion of cancer.
