How Hepatitis B Medications Work

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that causes liver inflammation, and medications play a crucial role in managing the disease. The goal of antiviral therapy for hepatitis B is to suppress viral replication, reduce liver damage, and prevent complications.

Gold Standard: Entecavir

Entecavir (Baraclude) is currently considered the gold standard for treating chronic hepatitis B. It works by inhibiting the activity of the viral polymerase enzyme, which is essential for viral replication. By blocking this enzyme, entecavir reduces the amount of virus in the blood and slows down liver damage.

Alternatives: Tenofovir, Lamivudine, Adefovir

Tenofovir (Viread), Lamivudine (Epivir), and Adefovir (Hepsera) are alternative antiviral medications for hepatitis B. These drugs also target the viral polymerase enzyme, but they may have different mechanisms of action or side effect profiles compared to entecavir.

  • Tenofovir is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI) that has shown high efficacy in suppressing hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication.
  • Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that has been used for many years to treat HBV, but its use may be limited by the development of resistance.
  • Adefovir is an acyclic nucleotide phosphonate that inhibits viral replication, but it may have a higher risk of nephrotoxicity compared to other antiviral medications.
