How Herpes Labialis Medications Work

Herpes labialis, also known as cold sores, is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The gold standard medication for treating herpes labialis is Acyclovir, an antiviral drug that targets the replication of the virus.

How Acyclovir Works

Acyclovir works by:

  • Inhibiting viral DNA synthesis, thereby preventing the spread of the infection
  • Interfering with the viral replication cycle, reducing the severity and duration of symptoms
  • Preventing the formation of new sores and accelerating healing

Alternatives to Acyclovir

For patients who cannot tolerate or have contraindications to acyclovir, alternative medications include:

  • Valacyclovir, a prodrug of acyclovir that is more easily absorbed and has a longer half-life
  • Penciclovir, an antiviral drug that is similar to acyclovir but has a different mechanism of action
  • Famciclovir, another antiviral drug that targets the viral replication cycle and is used for treating herpes labialis and other HSV infections
