How Infertility Medications Work
Infertility medications aim to address underlying causes of infertility, such as ovulation disorders or low sperm count. The gold standard for treating infertility is lifestyle change, which includes maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol consumption.
- Ovulation Induction Medications: Clomiphene is an example of a medication that stimulates ovulation to improve fertility. It works by binding to estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus, which triggers the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and subsequently follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This increases estrogen production, leading to ovulation.
- Alternatives to Ovulation Induction: Intrauterine insemination (IUI) with donor sperm is another option for individuals struggling with infertility. IUI involves inserting a catheter containing sperm into the uterus during ovulation, increasing the chances of fertilization. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is also an alternative, where eggs and sperm are retrieved, fertilized in a lab, and then transferred to the uterus.
Medications for infertility may be prescribed based on diagnostic tests such as hysterosalpingography (HSG), semen analysis, or hormone level tests. These tests help identify underlying causes of infertility, allowing healthcare providers to tailor treatment plans accordingly.
