How Iron Overload Medications Work

Iron overload occurs when the body accumulates excessive amounts of iron, leading to various symptoms and complications. The gold standard treatment for iron overload is phlebotomy, which involves regular blood draws to remove excess iron from the body.

Medications as an Alternative Treatment Option

For patients who cannot undergo phlebotomy or require additional management of their iron levels, medications can be used as an alternative treatment option. The following medications are commonly used to treat iron overload:

  • Deferoxamine (Desferal): A chelating agent that binds to excess iron and facilitates its excretion from the body.
  • Deferasirox (Exjade): An oral chelator that selectively binds to excess iron, promoting its elimination through urine and feces.
  • Deferasox: A newer oral chelator with a similar mechanism of action as deferasirox, but with improved pharmacokinetics and reduced side effects.

These medications work by binding to excess iron in the body, facilitating its removal through various routes (e.g., urine, feces). Regular monitoring of serum ferritin levels is essential to ensure effective treatment and prevent iron overload complications.
