How Keratitis Medications Work

Keratitis is an inflammatory condition of the cornea, often caused by bacterial infections. The gold standard treatment for keratitis is topical antibiotic eye drops, which work by killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria on the surface of the eye.

How Topical Antibiotic Eye Drops Work

  • Killing bacteria: Topical antibiotics, such as fluoroquinolones (e.g., moxifloxacin), penetrate the cornea and kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria, reducing inflammation and preventing further damage.
  • Reducing inflammation: Antibiotics also have anti-inflammatory properties, which help to reduce redness and swelling in the affected area.

Alternatives and Complementary Treatments

In some cases, alternative treatments may be used in conjunction with or instead of topical antibiotics. These include:

  • Oral antibiotics: For more severe infections or when topical treatment is not effective.
  • Steroid eye drops: For non-infectious causes of keratitis, such as allergic reactions or dry eye syndrome.
  • Bandage contact lenses: To protect the cornea and promote healing in cases where the cornea is severely inflamed or ulcerated.
