How Keratosis Medications Work

Keratosis, a skin condition characterized by scaly, rough patches and potentially painful or itchy lesions, can be treated with various medications. The primary goal of these treatments is to remove the affected tissue and prevent further growth.

Topical Treatments

  • Imiquimod cream: This topical immunomodulator works by stimulating the body's immune system to fight off abnormal cells. It activates cytokines, which help to destroy cancerous or precancerous cells.
  • 5-Fluorouracil cream: As a topical chemotherapeutic agent, this medication directly kills rapidly dividing cells, including those responsible for keratosis lesions.

Physical Destruction Methods

  • Cryotherapy: This method involves freezing the affected tissue to destroy it. The cold temperature causes the cells to die and eventually fall off, leaving a smooth surface.

While these medications can be effective in treating keratosis, surgical excision remains the gold standard for removing affected tissue and preventing recurrence. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of treatment based on individual needs and medical history.
