How Necatoriasis Medications Work

Necatoriasis is a parasitic infection caused by the hookworm, Necator americanus. The gold standard treatment for necatoriasis is Ivermectin, which works by binding to glutamate-gated chloride channels in the parasite's nervous system.

  • Paralysis and Death: Ivermectin causes paralysis of the parasite, leading to its death. This occurs within a few days of administration.
  • Reduced Egg Laying: Ivermectin also reduces the number of eggs laid by female parasites, further contributing to the elimination of the infection.

Alternative treatments for necatoriasis include Albendazole, which works by binding to tubulin in the parasite's microtubules, and Praziquantel, which causes paralysis and death of the parasite through a different mechanism.

Metronidazole is not typically used to treat necatoriasis, as it is more effective against protozoal infections. However, in some cases, it may be used off-label for its anti-inflammatory properties to manage symptoms such as pruritus ani and skin lesions.
