How Relapsing Fever Medications Work

Relapsing fever is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia species, transmitted through tick or louse bites. The gold standard treatment for relapsing fever is Doxycycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic.

  • Doxycycline Mechanism: Doxycycline works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. It targets the ribosome, preventing the translation of messenger RNA into proteins essential for bacterial growth and survival.

Alternatives to Doxycycline include Ceftriaxone, Erythromycin, and Penicillin G. These antibiotics also target bacterial cell wall synthesis or protein synthesis, but with different mechanisms and spectrums of activity.

  • Alternative Antibiotics:
    • Ceftriaxone: Inhibits cell wall synthesis in bacteria
    • Erythromycin: Interferes with protein synthesis by binding to the bacterial ribosome
    • Penicillin G: Inhibits cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial lysis
