How Tinea Pedis Medications Work
Tinea pedis, also known as athlete's foot, is a fungal infection of the skin on the feet. The gold standard medication for treating this condition is Terbinafine, an antifungal agent that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes.
Mechanism of Action
Terbinafine: Terbinafine binds to squalene epoxidase, an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of ergosterol. This inhibition prevents the formation of ergosterol, ultimately leading to cell membrane disruption and fungal cell death.
Alternative Medications
For patients who cannot tolerate or are resistant to Terbinafine, alternative medications include:
Clotrimazole: An imidazole antifungal that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol.
Miconazole: A triazole antifungal that also inhibits ergosterol synthesis.
Itraconazole: A triazole antifungal with a broader spectrum of activity, including dermatophytes and other fungi.
