How Tinea Versicolor Medications Work

Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection of the skin caused by Malassezia, a type of fungus that is naturally found on the skin. The infection occurs when the fungus overgrows and causes discoloration and scaling of the skin.

Gold Standard Treatment: Ketoconazole Cream

Ketoconazole cream is considered the gold standard treatment for tinea versicolor due to its high efficacy and safety profile. It works by inhibiting the growth of Malassezia fungus, thereby reducing the symptoms of the infection. Ketoconazole cream is applied topically to the affected area 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks.

Alternative Treatments

  • Terbinafine Cream: Terbinafine cream is an alternative treatment option that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes. It is applied topically to the affected area 2-3 times a day for 2 weeks.
  • Itraconazole Oral Solution: Itraconazole oral solution is an alternative treatment option that works by inhibiting the growth of Malassezia fungus. It is taken orally once daily for 7-14 days.
  • Selenium Sulfide Shampoo: Selenium sulfide shampoo is a topical treatment option that works by reducing the pH of the skin and thereby inhibiting the growth of Malassezia fungus. It is applied to the affected area 2-3 times a week for 4 weeks.

It's essential to note that while these alternative treatments may be effective, they may not be as potent as ketoconazole cream and may require longer treatment durations or more frequent applications.
