Trichuriasis
Trichuriasis is a parasitic infection caused by the whipworm parasite, typically treated with antibiotics or antiparasitics. Our pharmacy offers a range of medications to help alleviate symptoms such as abdominal pain and diarrhea.

How Trichuriasis Medications Work
Trichuriasis, an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Trichuris trichiura, requires effective medication to eliminate the parasite and alleviate symptoms. The gold standard treatment for trichuriasis is Metronidazole.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole, a nitroimidazole antibiotic, works by:
- Interfering with the parasite's DNA replication and cell division
- Inhibiting the production of essential proteins necessary for the parasite's survival
- Inducing oxidative stress, leading to cellular damage and death in the parasite
Alternative Treatments
For patients who cannot tolerate Metronidazole or have contraindications, alternative treatments include:
- Ivermectin: a macrocyclic lactone that binds to glutamate-gated chloride channels in the parasite's nervous system, leading to paralysis and death
- Albendazole: a benzimidazole carbamate that inhibits microtubule polymerization, disrupting the parasite's cytoskeleton and causing cell cycle arrest
- Praziquantel: an anthelmintic that increases permeability of the parasite's membrane to calcium ions, leading to muscle contraction and paralysis
