How Urticaria Medications Work
Urticaria, also known as hives, is a common skin condition characterized by itchy, raised welts or blisters. The primary goal of medication treatment for urticaria is to alleviate symptoms and prevent further episodes.
Gold Standard Treatment: Antihistamines
The gold standard treatment for urticaria is antihistamines, such as Diphenhydramine. These medications work by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical released from mast cells during an allergic reaction or other inflammatory response.
- Antihistamines bind to histamine receptors on nerve endings, preventing histamine from binding and causing symptoms
- This leads to reduced itching, redness, and swelling of the affected area
Alternatives and Adjunctive Therapies
For patients who do not respond to antihistamines or require additional symptom control, alternative treatments may be considered. These include:
- Corticosteroids (e.g., Prednisone), which reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system
- Leukotriene modifiers (e.g., Montelukast), which block the action of leukotrienes, a type of chemical involved in allergic reactions
- Omalizumab (monoclonal antibody), which targets and binds to IgE antibodies, reducing their ability to trigger allergic responses
