Boniva
/Boniva is a bisphosphonate medication used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is available as an oral tablet and is a prescription-only medication. Patients are advised to take Boniva on an empty stomach with a full glass of water and remain upright for at least 60 minutes after taking it to reduce the risk of esophageal irritation. Boniva should not be used in patients with abnormalities of the esophagus or those unable to stand or sit upright for at least 60 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Boniva, which contains the active ingredient ibandronate, works by helping to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures. It does this by slowing down the process that breaks down bone tissue, allowing the body to maintain or increase bone density over time.
The pharmacologic mechanism of ibandronate involves its action as a bisphosphonate, which specifically inhibits osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. Ibandronate binds to hydroxyapatite in bone, leading to a decrease in the recruitment and activity of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone breakdown. This results in a net gain in bone mass and a reduction in the turnover of bone tissue, thereby improving overall bone strength and reducing the risk of osteoporotic fractures.
