What is Rybelsus
Rybelsus is a prescription medication that contains the active ingredient semaglutide. It is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults to help improve blood sugar control. The drug works by mimicking the action of a hormone called GLP-1, which increases insulin secretion and decreases glucagon secretion in response to meals. This helps to lower blood sugar levels. There are other medications in the same class, known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which include injectable forms like Ozempic and Victoza, also containing semaglutide and liraglutide, respectively. Rybelsus is unique as it is the first oral GLP-1 receptor agonist available.
