Xifaxan
/XIFAXAN is an antibiotic belonging to the class of rifamycins, primarily used to treat travelers' diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli and to reduce the risk of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver disease. It is administered as an oral tablet and is available by prescription only. Patients are advised that XIFAXAN is not effective for systemic infections and should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to rifaximin or any of its components.
Interactions
Other antibiotics: Concurrent use may reduce the effectiveness of rifaximin. It is advised to avoid using rifaximin with other antibiotics.
Antacids: Antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium may decrease the absorption of rifaximin. It is recommended to separate dosing by at least 2 hours.
