How Protozoan Infections Medications Work

Protozoan infections are caused by single-celled parasites that infect the human body. The gold standard medication for treating these infections is Metronidazole, an antiprotozoal agent that works by:

  • Inhibiting DNA synthesis and function, ultimately leading to cell death.
  • Interfering with the parasite's ability to utilize oxygen, which is essential for its survival.

Metronidazole is effective against a wide range of protozoan parasites, including Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and Trichomonas vaginalis. It is typically administered orally in the form of tablets or suspension.

In cases where Metronidazole is not suitable or effective, alternative medications such as Paromomycin and Nitazoxanide can be used. These antiprotozoal agents work by:

  • Interfering with the parasite's ability to absorb nutrients.
  • Inhibiting the parasite's growth and replication.

It is essential to note that secondary bacterial infections may also occur in patients with protozoan infections. In such cases, antibiotics like Clindamycin can be prescribed to treat the underlying bacterial infection.
