Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils, often causing a sore throat. It is a common, usually mild infection that requires simple treatment and home care.
Treatment and Care Options
The treatment depends on whether the tonsillitis is viral or bacterial. If it is bacterial (like Strep throat), a doctor will likely prescribe antibiotics. If it is viral, treatment focuses on managing symptoms until the infection clears.
For home care, focus on reducing throat irritation. Drink plenty of fluids, especially warm liquids like tea, and eat soft foods. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage fever and throat pain. Saltwater gargles several times a day can also provide soothing relief.
What Causes Tonsillitis?
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are small masses of tissue located at the back of the throat. The most common causes are infections, usually viral, but sometimes bacterial.
- Viruses: The most frequent cause, often accompanying a common cold or flu.
- Bacteria: Often caused by Strep throat (Streptococcus) and requires antibiotics.
- Irritants: Smoking, dry air, or allergies can irritate the tonsils and make them susceptible to infection.
