How Tonsillitis Medications Work

Tonsillitis is a bacterial infection of the tonsils, characterized by inflammation and swelling. The gold standard treatment for tonsillitis is Penicillin, which targets the causative bacteria.

Mechanism of Action

  • Penicillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, ultimately leading to bacterial death and resolution of symptoms.
  • The antibiotic binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on the bacterial cell wall, preventing the formation of a stable cell wall and causing the bacteria to lyse.

Alternative Treatments

In cases where patients are allergic to Penicillin or have resistant strains, alternative treatments include:

  • Amoxicillin, which has a similar mechanism of action to Penicillin but is effective against a broader range of bacteria.
  • Cephalosporins and Macrolides, which target different bacterial cell wall synthesis pathways or inhibit protein synthesis, respectively.

Importance of Accurate Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis is crucial in determining the most effective treatment. Diagnostic tests such as throat culture, rapid strep test, and blood tests can help identify the causative bacteria and guide antibiotic selection.
