Description
Asacol is a medication classified as an anti-inflammatory agent used to treat ulcerative colitis and proctitis. It is administered as an oral tablet and is available by prescription only. Patients are advised to be aware that Asacol may cause gastrointestinal side effects and should not be used in individuals with hypersensitivity to mesalamine or any of its components.
Interactions
- Azathioprine and Mercaptopurine: Concurrent use may increase the risk of hematologic toxicity. Patients are advised to monitor for signs of toxicity.
- Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): Co-administration may increase the risk of renal impairment. It is recommended to monitor renal function.
- Drug–Disease Interaction: Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to mesalamine or salicylates should avoid using Asacol due to the risk of allergic reactions.
