Description
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections. It is available in oral tablet and injectable forms and requires a prescription. Interactions
- Antacids containing magnesium, aluminum, or calcium: May reduce the absorption and effectiveness of ciprofloxacin.
Management: Administer ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking these agents. - Warfarin: Ciprofloxacin may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, increasing the risk of bleeding.
Management: Monitor INR closely and adjust warfarin dosage as necessary. - Other drugs that prolong QT interval (e.g., antiarrhythmics): Increased risk of QT prolongation.
Management: Use with caution and monitor for signs of QT prolongation. - Myasthenia gravis: Ciprofloxacin may exacerbate muscle weakness in patients with this condition.
