How Heartburn Medications Work
Heartburn medications work by reducing the production of stomach acid or neutralizing existing acid in the esophagus. The most commonly used medication for heartburn is an Antacid, which belongs to the class of Histamine-2 (H2) blockers.
How Antacids Work
Antacids work by:
- Neutralizing stomach acid with bases such as aluminum or magnesium hydroxide
- Providing quick relief from heartburn symptoms, but only for a short period of time (usually 1-2 hours)
Alternatives to Antacids
For more severe or chronic cases of heartburn, alternatives such as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) and Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) medications may be prescribed. These medications work by:
- Inhibiting the production of stomach acid at its source
- Providing longer-lasting relief from heartburn symptoms, often for several days or even weeks
Lifestyle Modifications and Prevention
While medications can provide quick relief from heartburn symptoms, lifestyle modifications are also essential in preventing future episodes. These include:
- Weight loss to reduce pressure on the stomach
- Dietary changes, such as avoiding trigger foods and eating smaller meals
- Avoiding triggers such as lying down after eating or wearing tight clothing
